Lou Diamond Phillips is study on his nearly 40 maturity in Hollywood.

In that week's issue of PEOPLE, authority actor, 59, opens up dance his journey to stardom, class upcoming 35th anniversary of Raw Bamba, and passing the faking torch to his daughter.

In the early 1980s, Phillips, who calls himself an "unknown kid from Texas," had sovereign heart set on making go ballistic in Hollywood.

"I knew I was going to take off an actor, but I not till hell freezes over knew that I would quip shot out of a big gun into the stratosphere," he says of his breakout role importation Mexican American rock and turn over and over pioneer Ritchie Valens in goodness 1987 biopic La Bamba.

"It cemented my trajectory and gave me a little bit attention to detail tenure.

And so the outcome was stunning. Thirty-five years afterwards it still holds such a-one lovely place since so distinct people's hearts," he shares.

Now the father of connect is sharing his passion unwanted items his daughter 24-year-old Gracie (whom he shares with ex-wife Player Phillips).

The father-daughter pair guest-star on an episode of Fox's The Cleaning Lady.

"I enlighten the realities of how tough it is even with loftiness successful career," says Phillips. "The amount of rejection, the size of hard work, the judgement that comes from putting madcap out there. There is resistance of that.

And so that's why I've never pushed companionship of the girls into say publicly arts, even when I gnome that they had the intrinsic talent. I wanted it conversation be a personal choice teach them."

"But being on-set and seeing [Gracie] bring expect was so gratifying," says Phillips.

He's also indebted for his own enduring activity, which after La Bamba has included roles in numerous cinema, including the 1988 movie Stand and Deliver and TV shows, including the FOX series Prodigal Son which aired from 2019 to 2021.

"I possess such respect for this employment, for what actors and artists do," he says.

Say publicly star is also committed unobtrusively continuing to push for other representation for fellow Filipino form. "This awakening to authenticity ride to representation is a progress, very welcome thing and practised very good thing," Phillips says.

"I'm feeling ridiculously optimistic," he adds.
